In the Gospel today John the Baptist bears witness to the Lord, the one upon whom the Spirit descended with these words, “this is the Son of God” The sending of the ‘Son’ is anticipated by the prophet who says he will come to be light for the nations.

Jesus proclaims a call to repentance, which is an invitation to turn to Him. This is borne out in the call of Peter and his brother Andrew. The call is to follow Him, to become learners of his way of living and acting, to form our thinking according to his teaching; to open our hearts to his aspirations and desires.

The eight Beatitudes of Matthew's gospel are the ‘Constitution’ and ‘Charter of Rights’ for the kingdom Jesus inaugurates. This is his teaching as the new Moses, from the top of the mount. The first Beatitude is key for the seven that follow. It is in itself a perfect reflection of the heart of Christ: ‘Blessed are the poor.’
